Why are seventeen role slots open, you ask? The elite four is just that. Four. You're betting I can't count, aren't you. i am saddened /cries
But, hey, wait a minute before you pass critical judgment! We at Matsunoki have a perfectly valid reason for introducing these new roles, as well as basing them only loosely on the canon Elite Four. Each of these seventeen are designated to a specific type of Pokémon species, and represents the literal best of the best in the arena. To allow for a larger, more varied canon cast, we felt it was necessary to make the list less exclusive. Gym leaders serve their original purpose, but are generally considered more or less accessible to amateur trainers. The Elite are not.
